Advice on Letter Writing
It is important that all the letters sent to the Secretary of State/GOSW objecting to the ‘Western Extension’ are not just copies of others. We have therefore prepared some examples and listed below suggestions from which you might draw comments. Please try to specifically mention 'Area of Search 7B' which is the Lytchett Minster/Lytchett Matravers area.
- Impact on an already overloaded transport network with only a limited bus service to ameliorate private vehicle use.
- Impact on natural environment, especially nature conservation sites and the nearby Upton Heath.
- Flooding issues in Lytchett Minster which would be exacerbated by the development on neighbouring higher ground.
- The lack of local infrastructure – primary school already over planned capacity and secondary school at full capacity. Health facilities overstretched and would need new build and additional staffing.
- The Examination in Public recommended an excessive increase in Purbeck’s housing allocation (146%), 2750 to be built in North East Purbeck – Lytchetts Matravers and Minster.
- The sewerage system and water supply already operate at full capacity.
- Because Lytchett Matravers sits on high ground, the visual impact of an extensive development will detract from the natural beauty of important tourist venues in Poole Harbour and Purbeck.
- Most of the land suggested for development is prime agricultural land. It would seem stupid to concrete it over at a time of increasing need for local food production.
- It is suggested that transport problems could be overcome by ‘demand management’. The only public transport available in the bus service and commuters already face considerable congestion in accessing employment locations in Bournemouth and Poole.
- The village has an above average proportion of social housing whose residents mostly work, and commute by car, in the South-East Dorset conurbation.
- Local roads to natural recreation areas such as Swanage are already overloaded in peak holiday periods leading to Police closures.
- The whole idea of the development is a simplistic approach to a problem by urbanites who have no appreciation of rural issues. We are living in active villages, not a dormitory to the nearby conurbation.
These are just some of the many points you might make in a letter of objection to the Secretary of State.
